This workshop is recommended for experienced IBDP Environmental Systems and Societies educators looking to further develop their professional expertise towards supporting students complete Practical Activities, the Collaborative Sciences Project and Individual Investigations (Internal Assessment).

This workshop is designed to guide participants towards a holistic understanding of the essential aspects required for effective implementation of the IBDP Environmental Systems and Societies Individual Investigation (Internal Assessment). You will therefore explore the premise that the Experimental Programme is an integral, inquiry-based component of the IBDP ESS course towards promoting both the conceptual approach to learning and the development of essential skills required by students to complete the Individual Investigation. Participants will:

  • Appreciate the relevance and importance of the ESS Experimental Programme as it relates to the broader IB philosophy.
  • Explore pathways that scaffold their approaches to teaching and approaches to learning in order to effectively prepare their students.
  • Develop tools and processes that enhance implementation of the ESS course to support their students with the acquisition of skills in the study of ESS.
  • Engage in activities that develop their understanding of the requirements of the Individual Investigation to support efficient facilitation.
  • Analyse the components necessary within the criteria basis of the internal assessment and develop associated constructivist pedagogies.
  • Reflect on their own practice and examine challenges that students may encounter to adopt a solutions-based focus.
  • Review student sample Individual Investigations to develop a clear understanding of how the internal assessment criteria are applied.
